Barcelona City Council recognizes Damm's commitment to biodiversity
Damm's biodiversity protection plan has been recognized at the second edition of the Agenda 2030 awards in Barcelona as the best project promoted by a company to achieve the SDGs
Damm has received an award at the Agenda 2030 awards in Barcelona for its biodiversity protection plan, which integrates the actions developed to preserve the fauna and flora of the environments in which it operates. The company received this recognition, awarded by the Barcelona City Council, at a ceremony held at the Ca l'Alier urban innovation center.
Among the most outstanding points of the biodiversity plan is an initiative launched with the Galanthus Association to promote the naturalization of the Estrella Damm Old Brewery and enrich Barcelona's biodiversity. In the framework of this action, feeders and nesting boxes for different urban birds, nests for bats, water points and an insect hotel were installed, and green spaces for pollinators were created. Native species of shrubs and aromatic plants were also planted and 20 swifts recovering in the Torreferrusa fauna center were released.
Damm has also promoted other projects such as the collaboration with the Barcelona Zoo Foundation to reintroduce some species into their natural habitat. These include the Majorcan midwife toad, an amphibian that lives in the streams of the Tramuntana mountain range, or the Spanish carptooth, a Mediterranean fish. Damm has also promoted collaboration with the Centre for the Recovery of Marine Animals (CRAM) to protect the loggerhead turtle.
Damm's biodiversity protection plan stems from the company's need to broaden its scope of action in sustainability and contribute to the fight against climate change and its negative consequences on habitats and ecosystems. Through collaboration with different local entities, the company has set up different projects that revolve around three main axes: the conservation of endangered animal and plant species, the naturalization of its work centers and raising public awareness.
In 2022 Barcelona City Council created the Barcelona Agenda 2030 awards to recognize and disseminate innovative initiatives with a measurable impact on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Barcelona. For the second annual awards, the jury recognized Damm's biodiversity protection strategy as the best business initiative for its contribution to achieving the SDGs in the city.
