Jorge Villavecchia, named president of Ecovidrio
The CEO of Damm and former Ecovidrio vice-president will from now on be responsible for ensuring the correct implementation of the strategies developed by the entity's board of directors to increase recycling rates.
Ecovidrio is a non-profit entity that manages glass waste recycling in Spain. Its board of directors has recently named Jorge Villavecchia Barnach-Calbó, CEO of Damm, new president in representation of the Spanish brewers association "Cerveceros de España". According to the rotating system applied to the entity's governing bodies, Jorge Villavecchia will hold the post up until 2023 and will be ultimately responsible for the correct implementation of the strategies developed by Ecovidrio, as well as for the achievement of the ambitious goals set for increasing recycling rates, included in its Glass Containers Recycling Strategy 2020-2025.
With this appointment, the former vice-president of the entity will replace Javier Aubareda (Freixenet). During his tenure, Jorge Villavecchia will be accompanied by Luis de Javier Esteban (Bodegas Torres), named next vice-president in representation of the Spanish spirits manufacturers and distributors association "Espirituosos de España".
Jorge Villavecchia takes office at a key moment for the environmental question in Spain, as both the European Directive on Waste and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive need to be transposed. The climate emergency, the Spanish transition towards an actual circular economy and the contribution to the achievement of the goals set in the 2030 Agenda will set the course for Ecovidrio's roadmap and commitments.
Jorge Villavecchia stated the following: "I am deeply confident that Ecovidrio's ambition, as well as the Spanish glass containers recycling model will allow us to achieve recycling rates of over 80%, thus greatly exceeding legislative requirements. This entity has showed a real commitment to contribute to the sustainable development of our country. In the following years, we will invest over 500 million euros on environment-focused state-of-the-art business intelligence techniques, the intensification of operations within the Spanish food service sector, innovation for citizen mobilization and cutting-edge selective collection techniques. Of course, all of these efforts will be carried out with the sustainability of our value chain in mind".
