Damm becomes the first fast-moving consumer goods manufacturer in Spain to be awarded a second Lean & Green star
Obtaining a second Lean & Green star certifies that Damm have reduced CO2 emissions from their logistics activities by over 30% between 2016 and 2022
Damm have been recognized with a second Lean & Green star awarded by the AECOC (Spanish Manufacturers and Distributors Association) upon achieving the goal of reducing the CO2 emissions derived from their logistics activities by over 30%. Thanks to the implementation of an action plan focused on energy reduction, the transformation of their vehicle fleet, collaborative transport and internal best practices training, Damm have succeeded in becoming become the first fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) manufacturer in Spain to achieve this major milestone in environmental sustainability.
The company’s bet on driving initiatives that promote operations-wide sustainability led Damm to receive their first Lean & Green star in 2020 upon reducing their CO2 emissions by 20% between 2016 and 2019. From 2016 to 2022, Damm exceeded the initial milestone by achieving an over 30% reduction of the emissions generated in their logistics process, thus making them worthy of their second Lean & Green star.
To successfully expand the reduction of CO2 emissions in their activities, Damm implemented an action plan focused on optimizing energy consumption and reducing their environmental footprint. Amongst the initiatives carried out, increasing their energy self-consumption capabilities by expanding the photovoltaic infrastructure at several of their plants is especially noteworthy. Damm currently have a solar farm with a surface area of 59.000m2, being the national brewery with the largest extension of solar panels in the Iberian Peninsula. In 2024, this photovoltaic facility will enable the company to self-produce 9% of their total energy consumption with renewable energy, helping to avoid the emission of nearly 7,000 tons of CO2 per year, the equivalent of planting over 2,600 Aleppo pine trees each year.
In their search for more environmentally friendly transport options, in 2022 Damm launched the first duotrailer of their transport fleet, aimed at reducing their carbon footprint and optimizing their routes and loads. The incorporation of this vehicle, which covers the route between the logistical platform in the Logistical Activities Zone of the Port of Barcelona (ZAL Prat) and the Southeast Logistical Centre of Murcia twice per day, has enabled the company to reduce the carbon footprint by 25% along every route and avoid the emission of 105 tons of CO2 per year. Another of the action plans implemented to drive sustainable mobility has been the expansion of the fleet of trucks powered by low-carbon fuels based on natural gas. In addition, in 2023, three zero-emission electric trucks began making the trip between the Murcia factory and the Southeast Logistical Centre. The trucks make almost thirty daily trips between both locations and make it possible to reduce another 140 tons of CO2 on an annual basis.
“At Damm we are proud to have been recognised with a second Lean & Green star from the AECOC, a major milestone that drives us to continue making strides in our commitment to foster practices that reduce our environmental footprint. This recognition reflects the work and dedication of our entire team to promote a more sustainable future and encourages us to keep implementing projects that help bring about positive change in our environment,’’ said Juan Antonio López Abadía, Damm’s Director of Energy Optimization and Environment.
