Damm has received the Lean & Green star after reducing its CO2 emissions by 20%
This award certifies the company's carbon footprint reduction derived from its logistics activities between 2016 and 2019
Damm has been awarded with the Lean & Green star from the AECOC (Spanish Manufacturers and Distributors Association) in recognition for having reduced the CO2 emissions derived from its logistics activities by over 20%. The company achieved this reduction between 2016 and 2019 through the implementation of a strategy focused on energy reduction, the transformation of its vehicle fleet, collaborative transport and internal best practices training.
Damm's first Lean & Green star certifies that the strategy presented by the company last June after joining this European initiative has been successfully completed, as it exceeded the 20% CO2 reduction threshold required by the AECOC to receive this award.
"At Damm we work to achieve a more efficient and sustainable supply chain through eco-friendly activities that can be maintained over time, such as energy reduction or a vehicle fleet powered by increasingly sustainable energy", says Juan Antonio López Abadia, Damm's director of Energy Optimization and Environment. "The company also promotes training and awareness both for Damm's employees and for our clients and suppliers by implementing sustainable practices that help us succeed in the decarbonization of our logistics processes".
Strategy for a more sustainable logistics
The strategy presented by Damm for 2016-2019 includes a series of measures designed to achieve energy reduction and optimization, such as installing low-consumption LED lights at its logistics hubs or using electricity from renewable sources, which currently represents 100% of the company's plants and logistics platforms. Besides, the company has installed over 5,000 solar panels at some of its facilities in order to generate energy for self-consumption, which leads to an annual savings of 1,200 tonnes of CO2.
Some measures have also been applied to transport, such as the transformation of the company's fleet in order to use natural gas-powered vehicles, thus minimizing its environmental impact. In this regard, the forklifts at the logistics centers are now being replaced for electric forklifts with cleaner and reliable high performance lithium ion batteries with a long service life.
Damm is working with CHEP to develop a collaborative transport project designed to optimize loads and routes and reduce unladen trips, which would lead to a 204 T reduction of atmospheric CO2 emissions. Finally, it is worth mentioning the training activities such as courses and efficient driving campaigns aimed to raise awareness within Damm's employees, clients and providers.
